Goldfish Crackers

Flavour Blasted / Cheddar Jacked

In this production I was allowed a LOT of creative freedom to come up with the characters, vehicles, and world. I had a hefty amount of fun and I am SO thankful I got to work on this. I am very proud of the characters, even from early exploration versions. I am also proud of the mixed-media, in digital, of the process that I used to design the vehicles. I love sharing it!

There are 2 spots for this projects: Flavour Blasted and Cheddar Jacked. Our heroes appear in both, but they ride a different vehicle and go through a different environment for each. You can check out the final videos at the end. I hope you have fun looking through these designs as much as I loved making them!

*** DISCLAIMER!

You are about to see VERY early development all the way through the end stages, so be aware that some of the early designs will be ugly and very rough. It's not usually portfolio-worthy, but these sketches are still a fun insight and part of the process. Enjoy!

Characters

We were provided storyboards with the characters in the upper left corner.

I started off by re-designing those. The look needed was fun and maybe crazy, with cheese everywhere. The characters could have athleissure attire, but I was also asked to play with the proportions and outfits and go nuts - And we would afterwards tune it down.

Exploring head pieces on the cheese theme - I did this one on paper.

I explored poses of them jumping on the tandem bike.

Vehicles

I wasn't sure where to start. At first I got out some sketches with no reference. It's always fun to start without constraints, and sometimes I come up with interesting things like that. But I always end up looking for references after and sometimes even doing a few studies of real life props to get into my mind what is needed. After that I remmebered what a pain and a disaster I am at perspective and non-organic drawing, so I went ahead and did some mockups in Maya to help me out. I played with the proportions and thought about bugs. Then I drew over screen caps.

The bike was trickier, I doodled shapes and used them for the frame, as well as did some actual bikes draw-overs. After a bit some god things started to come up.

The doodle below on the right is a joke I sent the team - It got a few laughs and got me out of the scare of starting something new on a white paper.

Environments

Environments are always a hard thing to figure out for me, but through lots of references, some playing and lots of patience from the director and producers, something good started to happen and we ended up with a nice scene. There was no concept image I felt satisfied with to show off, but these explorations helped separately each with colours, over all composition, feel, and elements that would be in the scene. In the end the closest thing to it were the cheesy style frames I did loosely based off the storyboards I did, and a map with placement for objects and cameras.
